CHENNAI: VA Tech Wabag, an Indian multinational company involved in water treatment projects, in partnership with Israel-based IDE Technologies, has been awarded the contract for executing India’s largest sea water desalination project by Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (Chennai Metro Water).

The desalination plant will be delivered by Sorek Desalination Ltd, a subsidiary of IDE Technologies, 51% and Hutchinson Water, 49%
The Sorek seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) facility will be constructed under the BOT (Build Operate Transfer) model and is expected to reach a desalination capacity of 150 million m3 of seawater per year, a volume which will make it Israel’s largest SWRO desalination facility and one of the largest of its kind in the world. The plant will use energy generated on-site in a private energy generation facility (IPP) to be built by Delek Infrastructure Ltd, a 50% shareholder of IDE Technologies.

IDE Technologies, a world leading provider of sophisticated water
solutions, and its shareholders ICL (50%) and the Delek Group (50%),
announced that SDL (Sorek Desalination Ltd) - a company formed by IDE and
Hutchison Water, was selected today as the winner of the Israeli government's
prestigious Sorek desalination plant tender.
IDE Signs contract To supply Desalination Plant in Australia
Slated for completion during 2010, the new plant will be based on reverse osmosis technology - a modern process technology used for desalinating water in a wide range of applications. The plant will provide 140,000 cubic meters/day (50 million cubic meters/year) of high quality desalinated process and drinking water, using innovative technologies implemented by IDE in its projects worldwide, for example in the plants in Ashkelon and Hadera (over 100 million cubic meters/year each), Cyprus (20 million cubic meters /year) and in Eilat (3.6 million cubic meters/year).
