IDE Technologies has been short-listed to receive Global Water Intelligence (GWI) ‘2010 Desalination Company of the Year’ award, which is bestowed annually by the water industry upon the desalination plant supplier that has “made the greatest overall contribution to the desalination industry.” GWI also nominated and short-listed IDE’s MED desalination plant in Tianjin, China as its ‘2010 Desalination Plant of the Year’. The Tianjin plant was built by IDE for China’s State Development and Investment Corporation (SDIC).

In nominating IDE for 2010 Desalination Company of the Year, GWI cited IDE for its “unique competitive position in the global desalination arena during 2010, winning a significant portion of the Chinese desalination business and competing strongly for tenders in the Americas, Southern Europe and elsewhere in Asia.” GWI also based its nomination on IDE’s “stunning project wins” at Sorek, Israel, Tianjin, China and Chennai, India, all while commissioning its 127M m3/year Hadera, Israel reverse osmosis plant. The UK-based GWI also cited the company’s “complete mastery of both membrane and thermal desalination, and its nearly 50 years of commitment to innovation.”

IDE’s 150 million m3/year Sorek plant will be one of the most economical SWRO installations ever built. Its commitment to sell water under a long-term BOT contract for approximately NIS 2.00 ($0.50) per cubic meter represents the industry’s lowest price yet for desalinated water. Following the tradition of Hadera and Ashkelon, the Sorek facility will surpass all previous records in terms of desalination capacity, while further driving down the price of desalinated water.

In nominating and short-listing the Tianjin, China plant for the 2010 Desalination Plant of the Year award, GWI cited IDE’s “keen awareness of the interplay between water and energy use as central to the plant’s construction and reduced environmental footprint”. The Tianjin plant employs a number of cutting-edge innovations, including the capture of waste heat generated by the electric plant and using it to power the desalination units; the re-use of post-desalination waste brines to manufacture pure table salt; and the circulation of seawater as a coolant to reduce the use of external sources of fresh water. IDE successfully deployed four MED units at Tianjin in 2010 and is currently doubling the plant’s capacity to provide 200,000 m3/day of distilled water to Tianjin’s power plant, as well as drinking water to local residents. Tianjin is the largest thermal desalination plant in China, and among the largest MED plants in the world.

IDE is proud to be short-listed once again by Global Water Intelligence for these prestigious awards. The nominations are a testament to IDE’s ongoing contribution to the desalination industry, as demonstrated by its record of major membrane and thermal distillation tender wins and projects completed in China, Israel and elsewhere during 2010.
