Thermal Distillation

Thermal Distillation

IDE’s thermal desalination solutions are robust, cost-efficient and modular, offering capacities ranging from 250 to 25,000 m3/day per unit. Utilizing advanced technologies and know-how developed internally over the last 45 years, IDE’s solutions feature the lowest energy usage in the industry. In addition, they are reliable “workhorse” solutions – in fact, some have been working continuously for decades.

To meet the differing needs of refineries, process industries, power stations, remote development sites and other industries, IDE offers three types of thermal treatment solutions: Multi-Effect Distillation (MED), Mechanical Vapor Compression (MVC) and Industrial Evaporation. All IDE’s technologies are tailored to site-specific conditions, enabling the plants to minimize operational and maintenance costs while maximizing functionality and water quality. To reduce power consumption, IDE’s thermal distillation solutions employ a proprietary single-or-multi-effect process in which feed water is sprayed over horizontal tube bundles and repeatedly evaporated and condensed under vacuum, each time at a lower temperature and pressure.

Features of IDE's Thermal Distillation Process:
• Ability to extract pure water from tap water, brackish water and seawater
• Guaranteed quality of boiler feed product water (less than 10 ppm TDS)
• Superior reliability and high availability
• Flexibility of operation with excellent load following capabilities
• Increased thermodynamic efficiency for reduced energy consumption
• Optional utilization of low cost waste heat energy sources
• Economical construction materials
• Minimal corrosion and scale formation
• Short delivery and installation time
• Easily expandable modular design
• Simple operation and easy maintenance
• Safe and environmentally friendly processes

Multi-Effect Distillation (MED)
IDE’s MED uses low-grade waste steam as its motive energy, making it a cost-effective, eco-friendly solution for deployment near power generation and process industry plants. Individual MED units offer capacities ranging from 600 to 25,000 m3/day per unit, and can be deployed in parallel to multiply the output.

IDE has installed some of the world’s largest MED installations, including the Tianjin SDIC 200,000 m3/day plant in China, a vertically-integrated eco-system that features a unique power->desalinated water-> table salt business model, and the Reliance Oil Refinery in Gujarat, India, with a capacity of 160,000 m3/day.

Mechanical Vapor Compression (MVC)
IDE’s self-contained MVC units are ideal for sites in which electricity is the only source of power. Deployed by dozens of power plants throughout the world, the MVC is considered a "work horse" solution for the reliable provision of process and boiler feed water.

The capacity of individual MVC units ranges from 250 to 3,000 m3/day, with higher capacities currently in development. MVC units can be deployed in parallel to multiply production, as in the Sarlux Oil Refinery in Sardinia, Italy, where 6 MVC units are deployed to achieve an output of 17,280 m3/day.

Industrial Evaporation
IDE’s industrial evaporation solutions are highly cost-effective, eco-friendly systems for treating plant effluents, reclaiming industrial waste water, concentrating brines and re-capturing valuable by-products.
For water-intensive industries such as power stations, oil & gas refineries, chemical manufacturers, pulp & paper industries and others, the value proposition is clear: a significant reduction in operating costs, a dramatic reduction in water usage - and progress towards the goal of Zero Level Discharge (ZLD).
